In most cases i find orthogonal square or straight as you call it to be more attractive than diagonal.

I m using 20x20 tiles and the kitchen is is sort of split in 2 one side is the actual kitchen area and the other is the breakfast area split by the sink counter.

Btw laying straight isn t easier than hopscotch because you will always have four tiles that need to meet perfectly in a corner with a straight pattern.
